Armadillo Articulated armour Protecting soft flesh, Nose to the ground, Scuffling feet. Do you wonder armadillo How we bear to stand On two legs not four, And roar from such heights, Easily bruised, Permanently distracted? Do you marvel at our fragile claws, And short tongues, Unguarded, Our termite days In ever taller towers? Or are you enjoying Your tickly meal, Scooped from the earth, Warmed by the sun? N.Greenham |
About These Pieces
Collage, printing and splashing paint all added to the intrigue of this painting. I played with textures from rollers, combs and bubblewrap to suggest the armadillo armour and the force of life emanating from the piece.
I didn't know a lot about armadillos before researching this work. When I found out there are Pink Fairy Armadillos, and Screaming Hairy Armadillos it made my day - what great characters! Three-Banded Armadillos are the only kind that can roll into a tight ball. They often leave a small gap in their shell, and if a predator puts a nose in to investigate, they will snap their shells tight like teeth.
The poem comments on the fragile way we see the world, judging everything from our own limited perspectives. There is no right way to live. If you can feel the sun on your face, feel connected to the earth, and have a good meal with friends then you've got a good thing going. Racing for power to be taller, stronger, more in control conceives a fundamental weakness, because if you felt strong in yourself, you wouldn't need to strive to feel stronger. The armadillo wears its armour in a show of strength, but it masks a fragility and softness, because the armour is for defence; the armadillo doesn't attack.
The background of this painting is alive; the paper is not bleached so it will continue to colour as it ages although the paint colours will not change. I find this kind of living painting fascinating, but if you prefer to keep the white background, consider buying a print or canvas instead of the original.
