Butterflies She turns the pages tracing cellophaned faces beaches and sunsets: coloured strands of time. Caressing trailed images with well-worn fingers imprinting memories, seeing with her mind. The fragile wings of time pinned down; the camera never lies. She twists her floating memories Into glossy captured slides. © N. Greenham |

Digitized Oculus Rift divides the world In visual fantasy, Slip on the headset, hide away, Escape your cries and fears. Choose your prison carefully: Drink or drugs or sex, Or slip into a headset Made for total ecstasy. Skip the chance of paradise To choose an earthly hell, Creating crime and zones of fear, In teams or on your own. So what’s the point of fantasy? To choose a worse reality? To fill the crevice of our mind: Our insecurities. What creatures we who cannot live The life that we create? Fractured souls devoid of light Will not participate. We hide our heads, our thoughts and love In fear and doubt and pain, Waiting for the day when we Will see the light again. © N. Greenham |

April Shower Rain popping and dripping off the roofs and pavements Varnishing the road in a grey shine Clattering off eaves And gurgling down gutters and drains. The rain eases Birds sing their relief, Hiding in trees they shake their heads and flap droplets of water off their wings. My neighbour slams the car door and drives away, Sirens scream from the main road And the same breeze carries the birds Through cloudless grey skies. I turn on the lights. Late daffodils raise their heads To beckon the sun. © N. Greenham |

Echoes Your gift to us: a glowing torch, A fuse to light our hidden dreams. And when our tears dry We will see Your gift of time And honour it. Sunlight lies in every shadow, Rainbows hide in every tear, You love, your strength, your grace Live on, And sing to heal our sorrowed hearts. © N. Greenham |
IcarusA window squeegee and a roller helped convey the heat and energy of this painting. Can you spot the diving figure in the bottom right hand corner? Icarus.

Icarus Firebreak in the folds dancing away the memories. Remember your smile burned into my mind fighting the flames of old age: The ashes of life rekindled my heart flies with images too high and too fast to catch. Your face extinguished. Too soon I realise the net can never hold my fears. Dance on, Let the flames grow higher, Icarus falling towards the sun. A poem about Alzheimer’s © N. Greenham |

Invitation We hide our eyes And count to ten To see our fears Lurk manifest. But nightmares vanish In the light And are replaced With life divine. Our days begin To fill with fun, Our games extend In endless love. So hide your eyes And count no more, We’ll play again Without deceit. © N. Greenham |

On a Wing I long to be up on a wing with the birds, Soaring high through thermals wide, Diving carefree, gliding curves, Above all thoughts and earthly moods. If longing stares could set me free: Exhilarating ecstasy. © N. Greenham |

Lullaby Such a small body, Delicate miniature, Perfect eyes, perfect mouth, Tiny fingers, little toenails. Newborn, lying still, An image of perfection Wrapped in soft angel wings, Protected from the world. She will never see, Never hear or breathe. She graced us with a vision Of beauty, And cracked our souls On her way back to heaven. © N. Greenham |

Armadillo Articulated armour Protecting soft flesh, Nose to the ground, Scuffling feet. Do you wonder armadillo How we bear to stand On two legs not four, And roar from such heights, Easily bruised, Permanently distracted? Do you marvel at our fragile claws, And short tongues, Unguarded, Our termite days In ever taller towers? Or are you enjoying Your tickly meal, Scooped from the earth, Warmed by the sun? © N. Joy Does joy tire or get used up, Will love expire, Do flames burn cold, Hearts weaken if they beat too strong? Watch sunset’s grace, The lapping shores, Hear time eternal, Newborn love. Does joy get old when used too much? Do we get bored of happy smiles? Will diamond light refuse to shine or rainbows sag into straight lines? Sing joy, cry joy, live joy - Believe that happiness is not deceit. Pour joy, extend and magnify without concern, let joy revive. © N. Greenham |
