Remember your smile burned into my mind fighting the flames of old age: The ashes of life rekindled my heart flies with images too high and too fast to catch. Your face extinguished. Too soon I realise the net can never hold my fears. Dance on, Let the flames grow higher, Icarus falling towards the sun. |
About This Piece
"Icarus appeared suddenly, flying too close to the sun..."
This was an amazing picture to paint. I was totally engrossed in creating the colour and heat using rollers and a window squeegee. It was great fun and I was totally caught up i the process. That's when happy accidents happen. When I finished, I suddenly noticed a figure had appeared, diving and gliding into the bottom right-hand corner. This is Icarus, the man who tried to fly towards the sun.
The background of this painting is alive; the paper is not bleached so it will continue to colour as it ages although the paint colours will not change. I find this kind of living painting fascinating, but if you prefer to keep the white background, consider buying a print or canvas instead of the original.
The poem is about Alzheimer's. The themes of bright burning sunlight seemed to encapsulate the experience of the brightness and scorching, of the glimmers of life in the brain's cells (the folds of brain tissue). It is written from a first person point of view.
