April Shower
Rain popping and dripping off the roofs and pavements Varnishing the road in a grey shine Clattering off eaves And gurgling down gutters and drains. The rain eases Birds sing their relief, Hiding in trees they shake their heads and flap droplets of water off their wings. My neighbour slams the car door and drives away, Sirens scream from the main road And the same breeze carries the birds Through cloudless grey skies. I turn on the lights. Late daffodils raise their heads To beckon the sun. N. Greenham |
