Butterflies She turns the pages tracing cellophaned faces beaches and sunsets: coloured strands of time. Caressing trailed images with well-worn fingers imprinting memories, seeing with her mind. The fragile wings of time pinned down; the camera never lies. She twists her floating memories Into glossy captured slides. |
About This Piece
This painting reminds me of a city skyline with a beautiful sunset reflected in the water. What does it say to you?
The poem describes the way photos capture our memories. As I was looking back through an old album, the photos bound to sticky pages behind cellophane, I wondered at the role photos play in our lives. When I took those photos so long ago, I took them as a prompt to remember that wonderful moment. When I looked at the photo then, it reminded me of the feelings and emotions of the day. But as time passes, I look back through the old photos and realise my memories of the actual event are fading. Instead of the photo acting as a prompt, it has now started to replace the memory; the prints have started to create their own story. Did I misremember the weather, the people, the places in the background? My memories begin to merge with the photos, creating new pictures in my mind.
The background of this painting is alive just like the cellophaned pages in the poem; the paper is not bleached so it will continue to colour as it ages. The paint colours will not change. I find this kind of living painting fascinating, but if you prefer to keep the white background, consider buying a print instead of the original.
